[ আর.কে.নারায়ণ-এর লেখা ‘father’s help’ গল্পটি ‘malgudi days’-এর সম্পাদিত অংশ।এটি ভারতীয় ইংরেজি সাহিত্যের ইতিহাসে আর.কে.নারায়ণের এক মহত্তম সৃষ্টি।’swami and friends’ গল্পে প্রথম malgudi নামক কাল্পনিক জায়গার উল্লেখ পাওয়া যায়।indian thought publications ১৯৪২ সালে ‘malgudi days’ প্রকাশ করে।আর. কে.নারায়ণ তাঁর জীবনীকার সুসান ও এন রামের সঙ্গে এক সাক্ষাৎকারে উল্লেখ করেন যে,তাঁর মাথায় প্রথম আসে এক রেলওয়ে স্টেশনের কথা তারপর আসে ‘malgudi’ নামটি।তাঁর রচনার মূল হিসেবে একটি কাল্পনিক নগর সৃষ্টি করার জন্য তাঁকে তুলনা করা হয় উইলিয়াম ফকনারের সঙ্গে।
৩২টি ছোটো গল্পের সংকলন ‘malgudi days’-এর অংশ এই গল্পটি শিক্ষার্থীর মনস্তত্ব সম্পর্কিত।এই গল্পের মুখ্য চরিত্র স্বামীনাথনের বিদ্যালয়ে শাস্তি সম্পর্কে ভীতিকে তুলে ধরে।এক সোমবারের সকালে সে বিদ্যালয় যেতে অনিচ্ছুক হয় এবং বিদ্যালয় যাওয়া এড়িয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য মাথাজন্ত্রনার ভান করে।কিন্তু যখন তার সমস্ত কৌশল ব্যর্থ হয় তখন সে কড়া অভিভাবক তার বাবার কাছে শিক্ষক স্যামুয়েলের নিষ্ঠুর হওয়ার মিথ্যা অভিযোগ আনে।বিশ্বাসী বাবা প্রধানশিক্ষককে অভিযোগ লিখে সমস্যাটির সমাধান করার চেষ্টা করে
প্রকৃতিগতভাবে আমাদের মন চঞ্চল এবং অল্পমনস্ক মন তো একটু বেশিই চঞ্চল।এই গল্পের মুখ্য চরিত্র স্বমীনাথনেরও তাই।যদিও সে অস্থির চিত্তের ছেলে তবুও মানসিকভাবে সে সৎ।তার বিবেক তাকে স্যামুয়েলের বন্ধুসুলভ আচরণের কথা মনে করায়।সে অনুভবও করতো যে,স্যামুয়েলের তার প্রতি এক বিশেষ নজর আছে কিন্তু কেবলমাত্র অস্থির চিত্ততার কারণে পরের দিনের পড়া তৈরি না করে সে রবিবার এদিক-ওদিক ঘুরে সময় কাটাতো।অন্যদিকে সে বিদ্যালয়ে যাওয়ার হাত থেকে রেহাই পেতে চাইতো।তাই সে মাথাধরার ভান করতো এবং ক্লাসে স্যামুয়েলের মনোভাব নিয়ে মিথ্যা গল্প ফাঁদতো
